Homeowner Receives Fresh Start with New Bathroom

Mary is 82 years old and has been living in her home for over 40 years. She raised two children on her own and has always taken good care of her home. Due to health and mobility issues, Mary is now confined to the first floor of her home and needed her main floor bathroom to be made accessible and functional. Mary's bathtub was too high and the toilet too low, both challenges with her bad knees, osteoporosis and arthritis. To help Mary live safely in her home, Rebuilding Together Twin Cities made several modifications to her bathroom to make it safe and accessible, such as replacing the toilet with one that is ADA height; replacing her sink, which was not working properly; re-tiling the area around the bathtub; installing a new window for ventilation; repairing her plumbing so that the tub has hot water again; and installing grab bars around the bathroom.

Mary is currently recovering from knee surgery and is looking forward to having a fresh start with a new bathroom. These modifications will allow Mary to continue to enjoy living independently in her home for years to come. She was delighted to have such nice volunteers working at her home, not only for the work they performed, but also for the pleasant company.

Volunteers Make Energy Efficiency Improvements for Low-Income Homeowner

Student groups from the University of Minnesota, Engineers Without Borders and the Active Energy Club, partnered with Rebuilding Together Twin Cities to perform an energy audit and make energy efficiency improvements to the home of a single mother in St. Paul. The volunteers weatherized and finished the attic of the home, lowering heating and cooling bills and doubling the families living space. Thank you to everyone who worked on this project.

Rebuilding Together National Hosted 15th Annual NFL Sanctioned "Kickoff to Rebuild"

Rebuilding Together traded in the customary pre-game festivities during Super Bowl XLIV in Miami to join their Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade affiliate and over 300 volunteers for the 15th annual "Kickoff To Rebuild." This highly anticipated, NFL sanctioned charity event occurs every year in the host city of the Super Bowl and creates a lasting impact by revitalizing communities in need.

Tailgating of a different type occurred on February 4th as volunteers revitalized the historic neighborhood of Coconut Grove in Miami. Rebuilding Together's national partners for "Kickoff To Rebuild" included: Choice Hotels, Kmart, Bridgestone, Pepsi Bottling Group, and the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA). They were part of a 300 person volunteer team that worked together to rehabilitate seven homes of low-income homeowners and revitalize historic Coconut Grove.

In addition to financial support and volunteerism, Rebuilding Together's partners jumped in to make the event truly memorable: Comfort Inn by Choice Hotels brought the famous Steve Harvey Morning Show for a live broadcast; Kmart gave each of the seven homeowners a gift certificate to Kmart for $1,000 and supplied all the appliances being installed that day; and the Pepsi Bottling Group provided all the beverages for volunteers.
